Textile & Handloom Exercise 1.4.36
Shawl Weaving Artisan - Defects and Yarn Quality
Fabric analysis, measuring EPI and PPI
Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• identify warp and weft direction in a fabric and calculate EPI and PPI.
Requirements
Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments Materials
• Different Fabric sample. (cotton, wool, • Needle - 1 No.
synthetic, etc.) - as reqd. • Notebook - 1 No.
• Pick glass or magnifying glass - 1 No. • Pen - 1 No.
• Ruler or scale - 1 No.
PROCEDURE
TASK 1: Analyze warp, weft, EPI and PPI
Step-by-Step procedure 3 Record the EPI in notebook.
A Identify Warp and Weft Direction C Count Picks per Inch (PPI)
1 Put one sample fabric and rub in both directions. 1 Place pick glass or scale on the weft direction
(width-wise).
2 Check the length and width.
2 Count the number of weft threads (picks) in 1
3 Mark Directions: Use a pen to mark the warp and inch.
weft sides on the sample for easy reference.
B Count Ends per Inch (EPI) 3 Record the PPI in notebook.
D Report Format
1 Place pick glass or scale on the warp direction
(length-wise). 1 Write all the observations in the below mentioned
table 1
2 Count the number of threads in 1 inch along the
warp direction.
